In our March 2023 UKAAF webinar, Roger Firman was in conversation with Victoria Ward from New College Worcester.
Victoria spoke about her introduction to music learning the cello, her studies at the Birmingham School of Music as it then was, playing in youth orchestras, and in a semi-professional string quartet where she had an experience of having to play from memory.
She was clearly surprised to be offered the post of Head of Music at NCW but hasn’t looked back since in development of teaching strategies for her students, and also career development.
Victoria spoke passionately concerning what she observes as differences in sitting examinations for visually impaired students and sighted candidates, the imperative that any adjustments must not diminish the integrity of any exam, and the important part examination boards can play.
There was a fascinating insight into the various music-making activities at the College and how this has changed in the last twenty years, and how students are equipped for life after New College Worcester.
We are most grateful to Victoria for sharing her experiences and thoughts in this key area.
