We’re right behind this year’s imminent Global Accessibility Awareness Day

With less than a week left to go, the clock is ticking down fast to a very important date for UKAAF and anyone who supports its mission: Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD).

Set for Thursday, May 20th, 2021, GAAD’s stated mission is to get everyone “talking, thinking and learning” about digital access and inclusion, and the more than 1 billion people who are living with some form of disability or impairment. The idea is to shine a light on all those last remaining obstacles to full digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities.

As the organisers say, “Every user deserves a first-rate digital experience on the web—[and so] someone with a disability must be able to experience web-based services, content and other digital products with the same successful outcome as those without disabilities.”

Make sure you participate… even better: set up your own GAAD event!

This awareness and commitment to inclusion is the goal of every Global Accessibility Awareness Day, but we think this next one, the tenth one in succession, is something we should all get behind.

We’re delighted to say we’re not the only ones, with UKAAF’s primary supporter RNIB singling out some really great highlights you can dip into:

  • Microsoft has a weeklong series of bitesize sessions aimed at Accessibility Leads, Change Managers, Organisational Development and anyone with an interest in driving a more accessible and inclusive workplace agenda
  • Thomas Pocklington Trust is giving a webinar on Accessible tech: at home and work discussing how accessible technology enables blind and partially sighted people to thrive
  • Facebook is running a series of conversations with its Accessibility Team about designing for accessibility at scale
  • The Candy Crush developers are asking their users how they can make Candy Crush Friends deliver the best and most accessible game experience for everyone
  • Think you know all about digital accessibility? In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Teach Access has created an accessibility trivia game for you to play at home. And you can win Teach Access swag, just for playing!

Head on over to the GAAD website to find out more. And as you’ve still got time, why not set up a participating event of your own with your team or colleagues? This page can explain how: good luck!
